About the Book Palm oil comes from the oil palm, an attractive palm originated from Africa. The story of palm oil’s evolution from a highly prized local commodity in Africa to become the largest traded edible oil and fat in the world, with Malaysia its largest producer, is a source of inspiration to all Malaysians. The oil palm is the country’s “Golden Crop” reflecting the oil’s colour and the success of the palm oil industry. Carpeting the countryside from the shorelines to the foothills of the interior, the palms gracefully dominate Malaysia’ cultivated landscape. A minor producer of about 0.1 million tones just fifty years ago, Malaysia’s output in 2004 exceeded 13.6 million tones or about half the world’s palm oil production.
This coffee-table book tells the “Malaysian Success Story” and introduces the reader to the wonderful properties of palm oil. It takes you on a journey to the kitchens of the world; explains the unique properties of this oil, especially the healthy balance between unsaturated and saturated oils and fats and examines other health issues; provides glimpse of the country’s plantation industry and explains why it is a reliable and sustainable supplier of this remarkably versatile oil.
